I seem to have stumbled on an interesting problem: suppose I am given partial information in two tables, say imports and exports between different countries, and I can query these, but e.g. the destination is not always given (in export case) or the source is not always given (import).

Can these two tables be nonetheless linked? And can we identify the target / source? Some kind of probabilistic approach I'd imagine is relevant. But I'm not sure where to go from here.

My thinking on this is that the best one can do is join the tables and look for potential matches, and then assign probabilities.
